Meet O'Brien & Sons

Nearly a Century of Building Places that Bring People Together

Our story began in 1929, when Maurice Everett O’Brien founded what would become a multi-generation family business rooted in service, quality, and community. What started as a commercial fencing distributorship grew, decade by decade, into one of New England’s most trusted names in outdoor recreation.

O’Brien & Sons expanded into the distribution of indoor gymnasium equipment, supporting physical education programs for a new generation of students. As the role of physical fitness evolved and recess and outdoor play became essential to childhood development, the company once again adapted. This pivotal moment marked a clear call to action: outdoor recreation would become the heart of our work. Playgrounds, athletic spaces, and outdoor environments were no longer extras, they were essential community infrastructure.

The Second Generation: Expanding the Vision

Maurice’s sons, Peter and Eric O’Brien, carried the business into its second generation with a shared belief that recreation spaces should be thoughtfully designed, built to last, and accessible to all.

Under Eric O’Brien’s leadership, the company evolved into a true one-stop shop for outdoor environments, offering not only playground equipment, but also site furnishings, shade structures, splash pads, and athletic amenities. Strategic partnerships were formed with industry-leading manufacturers including Landscape Structures, DuMor, Vortex, and Cedar Forest Products, securing exclusive representation across the six New England states. These brands, synonymous with quality, durability, low maintenance, and longevity, helped position the company as a trusted partner to municipalities, schools, and organizations throughout the region.

The Third Generation: Shaping the Future

Today, Meghan and Erin O’Brien proudly carry the business into its third generation, honoring the past while preparing for what’s next. Their focus is on fine-tuning processes, expanding product offerings, and growing both the reach and the team across New England. With a commitment to innovation, efficiency, and collaboration, they continue to build on nearly 100 years of experience while ensuring the company evolves to meet the needs of modern communities.

Looking Ahead

As we approach our 100-year milestone, one thing has never changed: our belief that well-designed outdoor spaces bring people together, strengthen communities, and create lasting memories. From fencing to playgrounds, from gymnasiums to splash pads, and from one generation to the next we’re proud of where we’ve been, excited about where we’re going, and grateful for the communities who have trusted us along the way.

A Legacy of Service and Recognition

The O’Brien commitment to parks and recreation extends far beyond business. The Peter C. & Eric W. O’Brien Humanitarian Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Massachusetts Recreation and Park Association (MRPA), stands as a testament to that legacy.

Established in 1980, the award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to advancing the parks and recreation profession in Massachusetts-someone respected by their peers and deeply committed to enriching communities. That this award bears the O’Brien name speaks volumes about the family’s enduring impact on the industry.
